This course will introduce you to fruit tree pruning for fruit production and aestehtics. It will include some tips on variety selection and placement for small urban yards, proper timing of pruning, pruning techniques and pruning styles. Learn how to apply proper cuts, identify fruiting wood and use “the 5 D’s” as a starting point for beginning to prune. Gain an understanding of thinning, releadering , restoration and reduction. We’ll talk about how to train the trees in their first few seasons, desirable structure and size of mature fruit trees, how to restore a tree that has been poorly pruned or not at all and troubleshoot common issues like nutrition and pests. Participants are encouraged to come with pictures of their trees or drawings of their yards as examples to analyze. We’ll see a demonstration pruning of a mid sized mature tree and time allowing participants will be able to get some hands on experience.
